About the Speakers

Joyce Zimowski, FHFMA, CPA

 Joyce Zimowski, FHFMA, CPA is the Senior Vice President & Chief Financial Officer at HFMA. In this role Joyce is a member of the HFMA Executive team and is responsible for HFMA’s financial operations, along with oversight for the organizations evolving international strategy.

Joyce has spent 35 years in the healthcare industry, working for Rochester Regional Health and its various predecessor organizations. During this time, she has served in a variety of leadership roles in finance, including VP for Finance, as well as Hospital COO and most recently, SVP for physician practice operations. She is a long time HFMA member, serving at the chapter, regional and National level, including HFMA’s National Chair from 2004-2005.

Ms. Zimowski received her undergraduate degree in Business Administration from St Bonaventure University and her CPA from the State of New York.



John Fontanella, CPA, CCIFP

John is a tax principal within the Bonadio Group, Syracuse office. He joined the firm on January 1, 2015 when Testone, Marshall & Discenza, LLP merged into The Bonadio Group. John has more than 30 years of experience offering technical advisory services in taxation and financial negotiations. His experience includes federal, multi-state and international income taxes, specializing in tax planning for contractors, manufacturers, and car/truck dealerships.


In addition, John is an expert in sales tax – advising engineers, manufacturers, contractors, and dealerships, including public and international companies. His expertise not only includes a highly diverse range of tax planning and consulting services, but he also specializes in the Affordable Care Act, guiding employers on their responsibilities under this complex legislation.


Jon Herdlein, CPA

Jon is a Principal in the Commercial Division at The Bonadio Group.
  Jon has extensive experience supervising and managing some of the firm’s largest audit engagements, and has specialized expertise performing audits of consolidated financial statements for clients with international operations.  His client base includes manufacturing and distribution companies, real estate businesses, and employee benefit plans, as well as Bankruptcy Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 trustee audits.

Jon joined the Firm in September 1995. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants.  He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the State University of New York College at Fredonia, and a Master of Science degree in Accounting from the State University of New York at Binghamton.

Samantha Schafer, CPA

Samantha J. Schafer, CPA, is a Principal in the firm’s Small Business Advisory Division.  Sam has 16 years of public accounting experience in both audit and tax. Sam’s expertise is providing a full range of accounting, tax and consulting services to a variety of small and medium sized businesses. She is very active in the Batavia community.  She is a current member of the Rotary Club of Batavia, Treasurer of the Richmond Memorial Library Foundation, and a NIOGA Library Board Member.

Sam holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York, and is a member of the Accounting Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) the New York Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA).

William Pelino
Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer

Bill Pelino was named Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of the Greater Rochester Independent Practice Association (GRIPA) in 2008. He is part of the senior management team and has responsibilities for operations throughout the organization.

Bill is a Rochester, New York native and formerly served as Controller of Paychex Human Resources Business Unit and prior to Paychex was a Senior Manager at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Bill is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a Master of Business Administration from the Simon School of Business and an undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame.


Joseph Smith

In his position as Associate Director of Value-based Contracting at MVP Health Care, Joe Smith collaborates with providers to transform the landscape of the healthcare delivery system. Joe believes that aligning incentives for patients, providers, and payers will result in healthier and happier communities.

Joe joined MVP In 2012 in order to lead quality initiatives in early iterations of value-based care. Prior to that, Joe spent over a decade working in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Rochester Medical Center assisting children and families in developing skills to manage emotions and behaviors.

Renée Sutton

Renée has been with AHP since the company’s start in 2013.  As the Director of Physician Relations and Outreach, she manages the network’s relationship with its 2,200 providers and eight hospitals and develops engagement strategies to ensure that providers are aligned with AHP’s quality and cost mission.

A Rochester, New York native, Renée earned  Bachelor of Arts degrees in History and French from SUNY Fredonia.  Renée has worked in healthcare since 2001, serving in a variety of roles at Excellus BlueCross BlueShield and the University of Rochester Medical

Christian Kulak

Mr. Kulak is currently responsible for the development & execution of health plan strategy at Excellus BCBS including Profit & Loss responsibility for Retail Markets.  Prior to Excellus he worked at Harris Interactive, a premier market research organization, where he led a team of researchers to provide research-based consulting in healthcare.  While there, he also ran Strategic Health Perspectives; a strategic planning and forecasting service conducted in collaboration with the Harvard School of Public Health and healthcare industry ‘futurists’.  Additionally, he worked for NDCHealth, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and The Medstat Group in healthcare consulting and technology roles. 

Throughout his career he has used a data-driven approach to help clients create distinctive value, enhance value delivery, build demand, optimize pricing strategy, identify unmet needs, and improve sales force efforts.  He holds an MPA with an emphasis in Finance from the University of Southern California.  In his spare time, aside from spending time with his wife and three children, he volunteers providing strategic planning support to large community-based organizations and helping small business entrepreneurs with business planning.


Sabrina McLeod
Director of Finance

Sabrina McLeod, is the Director of Finance for St. Ann’s Community.  She has over 10 years’ experience working in senior care communities.  Prior to working at St. Ann’s, she worked as the Director of Finance for St. John’s Home, having come to St. John’s after 10 years working for the Monroe County Departments of Health and Human Services as their Finance Manager.  She was instrumental in the implementation of a cost accounting system at St. Ann’s which is based on breaking down cost to the lowest data element by multiple variables, including diagnosis and acuity.  She holds an MPA with an emphasis in Healthcare Finance from SUNY Brockport.  She has completed a certificate in Value Measurement for Health Care from Harvard Business School Executive Education.  She also holds a Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt from Rochester Institute of Technology.  In her spare time, she is an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Greece, NY, a member of the United Way of Greater Rochester’s Women’s Leadership Council, as well as a member of the Rochester Chapter of HFMA.
